Words from a Loving Husband:
As a company we had the privilege of providing care to Sally, a loving, energetic mother and devoted wife, who was injured in an accident that left her a quadriplegic. Here are some excerpts from a talk her husband Edward Bergmark, Ph.D., President and CEO of Optum, gave to our staff:

It is ... recognition that your company is exceptional; the people, you who provide care, are exceptional. I do not believe there is another organization like yours. You deserve to feel phenomenally proud of what you do individually and as an organization.

So how can you make this painful transition as tolerable as possible? By doing exactly what you have done.

The basics are so simple: a genuine smile, a lyrical voice with warmth and compassion, a gentle touch. We all know the difference between a forced smile and a real smile. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that will take away the pain. There are however, small things that can make a world of difference, that are magical in their simplicity. As humans, we recognize kindness, we recognize gentleness, we recognize real care, and we recognize the generosity of the human spirit. These are not the things that can be driven only by company policies and mission statements. They are driven by you, who you are, and the support you show for one another.

In closing, thank you for all you have done for my family, and building a remarkable culture of support and care. And thank you for making this… stage of the journey positive and restorative.
